Inaugural ‘Convocation Open’ is a big hit
The first-ever UWGB Convocation Open was a big success Wednesday (Aug. 29) and organizers plan to bring the event back for next year. Kudos to the winning team of Trudy Jacobson, Chuck Aslakson and Steve Taylor, one of 10 groups of three to take to the Shorewood Golf Course during the inaugural event. Additional kudos go to our own Chancellor Tom Harden, whose ceremonial first drive went nearly 240 yards — despite Harden’s humble insistence that it had been awhile since he played. Honors for closest to the pin on the tee shot go to Chuck Rhyner, while SuAnn Detampel and Kevin Fermanich had the longest drives on the fairway for women and men, respectively. Longest putt honors for men and women go to Kelly Franz and Karen Opolka, while Chuck Aslakson was closest to the right front bunker without going out. We also have to give a good-natured shout out for the shortest drive of the day, a 7-yard, 11-inch effort by John Arendt. Hope to see you all next year!
And speaking of golf … Retiree event is fast approaching
Just a friendly reminder that all are welcome to play at the UWGB Retiree Association Benefit Golf outing Thursday, Sept. 13. Proceeds benefit the Retiree Association Scholarship. The event kicks off with a 12:30 check in, which will be followed by a 1 p.m. putting contest and a 1:30 p.m. shotgun start for the four-person scramble. Stick around for a 4:30 p.m. picnic-style buffet and 5 p.m. awards and door prizes. Organizers will pair golfers up for foursomes as needed, and non-golfers are welcome to support the fundraiser through dinner attendance. For more info, call the University Advancement Office at (920) 465-2212 or visit the Retiree Association website.
