Innovation On-Ramp course & competition launching soon

After lots of positive feedback from last year’s Innovation On-Ramp course and competition, we’re working with WiSys again to offer this innovative opportunity for students!

A request of you:  Share this information widely encourage students to register. It would be great if faculty would mention the event in their classrooms. Also, encourage student orgs in your areas to get involved.

*EVENT TITLE: Innovation On-Ramp: To a Better Tomorrow

*FORMAT: Students register to participate in a free learning experience over 5 weeks. Some students will opt in to compete in an Innovation competition following the learning experience. Details explained below.

*FLYER: Attached and pasted below

*WHO CAN PARTICIPATE: All UWGB students (from any major and any campus) are welcome to participate! Faculty are also welcome to have students go through the Innovation On-Ramp course as an assignment in a for-credit course. Email martenk@uwgb.edu for instructions on enrolling groups of students. Plus, new this year, we are opening up the course to UW-Platteville students, and we hope to continue growing cross-campus collaboration around Innovation.

The Learning Experience:

The learning experience runs from October 10th to November 11th, 2022 thru a Canvas course and an engaging session each week. EACH MONDAY, a video and/or readings are posted into the Canvas course. EACH WEDNESDAY, an interactive session (in-person or via Zoom) is available to cover the content about the innovation process.

Week 1 (Oct. 10): Identifying a Problem

Week 2 (Oct 17): Evaluating an Innovative Solution

Week 3 (Oct 24): Identifying and Target Market

Week 4: (Oct 31): Meeting with Mentors

Week 4 (Nov 7): Practicing your Pitch

Students who complete all assignments will earn a WiSys Innovative Thinking Badge micro credential to add to their resume and LinkedIn Profile!

The Innovation Competition:

The competition theme is “To a Better Tomorrow” and the competition will be held on February 15th, 2023 at 4pm.  The competition will be in-person at UW-Green Bay in the Fort Howard Hall of the Weidner Center.

Students in all types of majors (e.g., Business, Social Work, PEA, Philosophy, Engineering, etc.), are challenged to identify a problem and design an innovative solution. Innovations are broadly defined – a product, service, social approach, etc.

Reasons for students to participate in the competition:

  • Opportunity to grow innovation skill set
  • Chance to win cash prizes (first place team wins $1000 and can go on to the Wisconsin Big Idea Tournament)
  • Chance to creatively solve a real-world problem
  • Great resume booster
  • Student org incentive: The first 5 teams representing a student org to register receive $100 for their student org

Who can I contact if questions? Feel free to contact Kathryn Marten at martenk@uwgb.edu or any of the other planning committee members.

Thanks!
