The Things That Have to be Appreciated, photos by Dan Meinhardt
During August, Ladybug Glass-Studio & Gallery in Algoma will host a photo exhibit titled “The Things That Have to be Appreciated, photos by Dan Meinhardt.” Meinhardt is a faculty member in Human Biology and Curator of the Richter Museum of Natural History. He serves on the curatorial committee for the Lawton Art Gallery, and has co-curated two exhibits there. The opening is part of Algoma’s monthly “First Friday and Saturday” art event, and takes place from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, August 6, 2021 and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, August 7.
The exhibit title paraphrases a quote that has guided Meinhardt’s work. Lewis Hine, whose photographs of child laborers inspired early 20th century U.S. child-labor laws, once said of his work, “I wanted to show the thing that had to be corrected: I wanted to show the things that had to be appreciated.”
