UW-Green Bay hits record number of undergraduate candidates for spring, summer
More than 900 University of Wisconsin-Green Bay students are eligible to participate in spring commencement ceremonies Saturday, May 12, including an all-time high number of undergraduate degree candidates.
As of May 1, 794 students had registered to graduate at the end of spring semester 2012, and another 108 students expressed intent to complete their degree requirements this summer, according to the University’s Office of Institutional Research and Assessment. All of those 902 students are eligible to participate in spring commencement ceremonies at 11:30 a.m. May 12 at the Kress Events Center on campus, 2420 Nicolet Drive. As of May 1, 709 students had signed up to take part in commencement.
Ninety-six percent (865) of the degree applicants are completing undergraduate degrees, a record-high figure that is 10 percent higher than the number of undergrads who completed degrees in May and August of 2011. The remaining 4 percent (37 students) are graduate degree applicants, which is 10 fewer students than received master’s degrees last May and August. Here, by the numbers, is a look at the class of 2012:
• Undergraduate degree candidates range in age from 20 to 63, with an average age of 26 years. One-third of the undergraduate applicants (291 students) are 25 years old or older.
• Graduate degree candidates range in age from 23 to 52, with an average age of 32. Eighty-nine percent (33 students) of the master’s candidates are 25 years old or older.
• Just less than two-thirds (64 percent, 555 students) of the undergraduate candidates are women. Seventy percent (26 individuals) of master’s candidates are women.
• The applicants’ racial and ethnic diversity essentially mirrors the campus as a whole, and 9 percent (76 individuals) of undergraduate candidates are students of color.
• Candidates for graduation hail from 17 different U.S. states and six foreign countries — Germany, Great Britain, Israel, Kuwait, Nepal and South Africa.
• More than 20 percent (179 students) of undergraduate degree applicants completed high school in Brown County. Eleven Northeastern Wisconsin high schools have more than 10 alumni applying for graduation in May or August: Green Bay Preble (36), Bay Port (24), Green Bay Southwest (21), Green Bay East (17), Marinette (16), Luxemburg-Casco (16), Pulaski (14), Ashwaubenon (14), West De Pere (13), Green Bay West (12) and Manitowoc Lincoln (12).
• Master’s degree candidates for May and August come from four programs — Environmental Science and Policy (14), Social Work (14), Management (7) and Teaching and Learning (2).
• Fourteen undergraduate degree applicants are slated to complete an associate degree, and the remaining 851 will complete bachelor’s degrees. Eleven bachelor’s candidates are completing triple majors, and 146 are completing double majors.
• Business Administration tops the list of most popular majors for this year’s undergraduates, with 119 candidates for graduation. It is followed by Interdisciplinary Studies (106), Human Development (85), Psychology (82) and Human Biology (69).
