Wind Symphony, Symphonic Band concert has touch of green

The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Wind Symphony and Symphonic Band, directed by Kevin Collins, will present their first concert of the 2009-2010 season Wednesday, October 21 at 7:30 p.m. in the Weidner Center for the Performing Arts.

The concert will include a performance of Frank Ticheli’s “Gaian Visions,” which the Wind Symphony has been studying to explore the Campus Common Theme “Realizing our Sustainable Future.”

The movements “Forgotten Forests,” “Desecration” and “Redemption” are reflections of Ticheli’s admiration for the beauty of nature and simultaneous concern for the environment. Ticheli wrote the work while on a fellowship at the McDowell Artist Colony in New Hampshire in 1990.

Also on the concert will be one of the earliest and best-known masterpieces for wind band, Gustav Holst’s “First Suite in E flat,” which was composed a century ago. Steven Bryant’s contemporary/impressionistic work “Dusk” will complete the Wind Symphony portion of the concert.

The Symphonic Band will feature a wide range of music including Johan de Meij’s picturesque and leitmotif-infused “Aquarium,” Jan Van der Roost’s “Suite Provencale” based on French Folk tunes, a choral work transcribed by well known conductor H. Robert Reynolds, “Contra Qui, Rose,” and an arrangement of “Just a Closer Walk” inspired by New Orleans “second line” funeral processions.

Tickets are $7 for general admission and $5 for students and seniors. Tickets are available by calling (920) 465-2217, or toll free at (800) 328-8587 or online by visiting www.uwgb.edu/tickets/performing.html.
