UW-Green Bay Music presents hand drumming, experimental music concert

Audiences will be treated to ”An Evening of Hand Drumming and Experimental Music” Friday, May 4 as University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Prof. Cheryl Grosso directs the 40th concert of the UW-Green Bay Music season.

The concert will kick off at 7:30 p.m. in the University Theatre of Theatre Hall, featuring a talented group of student ensemble personnel. Grosso will direct the group through several pieces she wrote or arranged, offering audiences a unique musical experience designed to push boundaries and broaden horizons.

First up for the ensemble will be “Rhythm Chant 12.1.4,” by Grosso, which will be followed by “Rock Etude 16” by Bill Douglas and arranged by Grosso. Two more Grosso pieces will follow — “Rhythm Chant 8” featuring Ben Hogan on vibraphone and Adam LeGrave on cajon (a drum resembling a wooden box); and “Basic Metal” featuring Grosso herself on vibraphone. Next up is Steve Reich’s “Pieces of Wood” and Alvin Curran’s “Rounds,” the latter piece featuring vocals from Ryan Braatz, Nicole Duhaime and Michaela Hogan. The concert will conclude with “Rhythm Chant 96.1.07,” another of Grosso’s original compositions; and “Mandate: Going Public,” by students Hogan and LeGrave, who will be featured on the drum set and congas, respectively.
