Return to the Kress: This time, hoops standout Tetschlag in academic spotlight

Kayla Tetschlag, graduating class speakerKayla Tetschlag is more than comfortable under the bright lights at UW-Green Bay’s Kress Events Center.

The graduating senior from Sheboygan was an all-conference performer and team leader of the Phoenix women’s basketball squad that finished its most recent season undefeated at home, 17-0 in games played at the Kress. Her team went 34-2 overall, reached the “Sweet 16” round of the NCAA Tournament and finished No. 9 in the nation in one of the two major national rankings.

On Saturday, May 14, Tetschlag will be in the Kress Center spotlight again, only this time she’ll be wearing black cap-and-gown regalia instead of her home white basketball uniform. In a record class of nearly 850 individuals eligible for diplomas, she was awarded the honor of speaking for her graduating class at the May 2011 commencement at UW-Green Bay.

Tetschlag will receive her bachelor’s degree with magna cum laude (high) honors in Business Administration. She has a marketing emphasis and minors in Spanish and international business. She is already at work on her master’s degree in UW-Green Bay’s graduate program in Management.

During her senior year she served as an intern and assisted officials including Jack Riopelle in beginning to form the new Institute for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, a campus-community partnership based at the University.

When the business program at UW-Green Bay was re-named and re-dedicated last fall as the Austin E. Cofrin School of Business to honor an early 20th century entrepreneur who built a worldwide reputation in the paper industry, Tetschlag was one of the University’s outstanding students interviewed for a video marking the occasion. She reflected on her appreciation for her UW-Green Bay education.

“It is a University where a lot of the professors are working one-on-one with the students, and you’re not going through a TA as you might be in a larger school,” she said. “That’s so valuable, to actually talk and work with someone with a lot of experience and knowledge.”

Tetschlag earned numerous basketball and academic honors at UW-Green Bay, highlighted by her selection to the Division I Academic All-America Team as chosen by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

UW-Green Bay’s graduating class speaker is chosen by the Office of the Provost from nominations of outstanding students made by the University community.
