UW-Green Bay Photographer/Videographer Sue Pischke’s Top Photos of 2021
My career in photography started as a newspaper photojournalist, which honed my skills and my photographic eye for awareness. I’m always looking to capture a meaningful moment, a connection, an expression, or a sense of wonder. Here are 10 of my favorite photos from 2021:
Sunset Spike Ball in Phoenix Park
I was in Phoenix Park photographing the Grayson Dewolfe band performing at the End-of-the-Year Celebration when I saw the sun starting to break out from a large cloud bank behind Studio Arts. I knew that I had seconds to capture the spike ballplayers in the sunset light.
Smiley Face Winged Phoenix
Starting in June, the construction scaffolding moved around Mary Ann Cofrin Hall as roofers worked on the building. I felt extremely lucky on August 29, 2021 that the scaffolding was positioned next to MAC Hall’s circle entrance, which is how I captured this interesting angle of students painting the Phoenix. Hammock Hide-and-Seek
These two friends made my day with their fun game of hammock hide-and-seek at Hammock Hang Out during GB Week. To see GB Week video: https://fb.watch/9TuB0HS5g2
Sunset Time-Lapse
I’m very fortunate to have an office on the eighth floor of the David A. Cofrin Library, so every time I walk to the elevator, I get to see aerial views of our beautiful campus. On October 25, 2021 as I was leaving work, I saw these amazing clouds and sunset light illuminating the Weidner Center and Theatre Hall and knew I was staying late. Boats on the Bay
The horn sounded and students in canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards raced to shore, which brought a friendly competition and a few smiling winners during GB Week’s Boats on the Bay.
Student Naima Musse
I really enjoy working with students to tell their Phoenix story through visual media. Naima Musse’s wonderful personality shines through on this photo taken outside on the Student Services plaza before the rain started. She is pursuing a double major in Nursing and Psychology. Viking Warriors
I felt like I was on a movie set as these two Viking warriors swung their medieval weapons during their epic battle on the UW-Green Bay Viking House grounds during the Green Bay Viking Festival. To see the video https://fb.watch/9TumbqsEAL
Fox River Sunset
It was October, I was driving home from work and saw the sky exploding with color, so I took a detour to the Green Bay Metro Boat Launch and captured this scene of the Fox River, Grassy Island Range Lights, and the Leo Frigo Memorial Bridge at dusk.
Circle Drive Bus Stop
I used the drone to capture this fall color scene of students waiting for the Green Bay Metro bus at the Circle Drive entrance. It would have been peaceful except for the noisy drone propellers, sorry. To see the fall color video: https://fb.watch/9TuRPzJKHM
Planting Wequiock Creek Natural Area
Every photographer loves capturing reflections, so when I saw UW-Green Bay’s Natural Areas Ecologist, Bobbie Webster’s reflection in the water, I took a rapid sequence of photos to capture this one of her planting wet meadow plant seeds at the Wequiock Creek Natural Area.
