Slideshow: Founders Association stands up for students, scholarships

Some of UW-Green Bay’s most devoted friends got together recently with a few of the University’s most promising and appreciative students.

The occasion was the first-ever Founders Association Scholarship Reception, held Nov. 4 at the Weidner Center for the Performing Arts.

Hosting the event were members of the Founders Association Board of Directors — community supporters of the University — represented in the photo above by Robert Southard, Nanette Nelson, vice president Robert Cera ’84, and president Scott Wochos.

The Association annually funds about 60 merit- and need-based scholarships averaging about $1,000 each for new and continuing students. The money is generated by that year’s private donations to the Founders Association annual giving campaign.

A highlight of the Nov. 4 program was a collective “thank you” offered by freshman Julia Shariff of Green Bay. She is the daughter of a UW-Green Bay alumnus and the grand-daughter of longtime economics Prof. Ismail Shariff. A number of parents of scholarship recipients attended the event, as well, and they, too, expressed gratitude informally to the Founders and University officials.

We’ll have a much-more detailed look at the Founders Association, its 40-year history and new repositioning in the December 2011 print edition of the Inside UW-Green Bay magazine.
