Congratulations to Alycia Winters — named Student Employee of the Year
The call for nominations began back in January. On April 9, 2018, 11 students were recognized, and one — Alycia Winters — was named UW-Green Bay’s Student Employee of the Year. Student nominations were judged by a panel of three university faculty and staff who rated on a scale from 1 to 5 in the areas of reliability, quality of work, initiative, professionalism and uniqueness of contribution.
Winters works as an office assistant for the Lifelong Learning Institute (LLI) and Continuing Professional Education. She was nominated by Matt Nieman and Susan Pike. While working in LLI, she runs rosters for 150+ classes for each semester, helps with the registration of more than 1,000 members in the Ungerboeck Software, manages issues with venues and assists with daily deposits, among other duties. For Continuing Professional Education, she creates handouts for trainings, inputs evaluations, helps with registration and other day-to-day office duties.
“It’s crucial that our division has someone that can deal with a busy work environment and not be scared off or intimidated by it,” wrote a nominator. “She tackles any new project or challenge head on and is never afraid to ask for any advice or questions. If she isn’t sure on something, she doesn’t guess, she goes and gets the right answer. If a complex issue or project comes up, our office knows we can trust in Alycia if we need the support to help complete the task effectively.”
Acting Assistant Vice Chancellor for Enrollment, Jen Jones, was the guest speaker for the presentation in the Phoenix Rooms of the University Union. Jones has worked 18-plus years at UW-Green Bay in her post-graduate experience. She reflected back on her experience as a student worker during her time as a UW-Green Bay student.
“I know the transformational power of student employment because I’m living it today,” Jones said. “No one at the age of 18 says, “I want to be an Assistant Vice Chancellor for Enrollment Management” when I grow up… My career roots in higher education starting the Residence Life office where a staff member named Lore Slattery, took a chance on a bold and naïve freshmen as her front desk student worker… That job led me to other paid positions on campus because I developed a network of people on this campus who identified opportunities for me to grow professionally. I learned so much from working while attending UWGB. I learned that I was made for a high education career… Without a doubt in my mind, I know that this campus runs on student employee power…”
Students at UW-Green Bay have worked more than 177,000 hours through from September 2017 through March 31, 2108. Of those students, 972 work in 1,273 appointed jobs (some work more than one position) and average about eight hours per week at those jobs.
Joe Schoenebeck served as emcee and Chancellor Gary L. Miller and Student Employment and Scholarship Coordinator Allen Voelker, each spoke and handed out the awards to the students.
