Forsythe, Houghton receive fisheries grant for sturgeon and whitefish research

UW-Green Bay Associate Prof. Patrick Forsythe and Associate Research Scientist Chris Houghton (UWGB Aquatic Ecology and Fisheries Laboratory) received $635,728 in support of local fisheries research. Forsythe and Houghton have proposed to gain a better understanding of lake sturgeon and lake whitefish reproductive and behavioral ecology in lower Green Bay with emphasis on the Fox, Menominee, Oconto and Peshtigo Rivers. This research will also seek to quantify the major drivers of fish community composition and structure in small tributaries connected to Green Bay and help to identify specific restoration targets that may serve to increase the reproductive success of multiple migratory and resident fish species. Funding was provided in part through the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, the United States Fish and Wildlife Service and the Wisconsin Office of the Great Lakes, and includes collaborators from Central Michigan University and the UW-Stevens Point. Funding will support four graduate research assistants, 16 undergraduate technicians, and one associate research scientist over three years.
