In the news: Wardle surprises local vet with Phoenix Hero Award

WLUK, Fox 11 aired a nice story Tuesday (Nov. 4) about a local veteran who will receive the 2014 Phoenix Hero Award from head men’s basketball coach Brian Wardle during the team’s Nov. 15 home opener. Wardle surprised honoree Dick Marbes with the announcement Tuesday, offering him a seat on the bench as the team’s honorary head coach. Marbes also will be recognized during halftime, and all military veterans and current servicemen and women will receive a free ticket to the 3 p.m. game. “I just choose to do this type of thing,” Marbes said, referring to his volunteer work driving other veterans to the VA hospital. “If I wasn’t doing this, I‘m not sure what else I’d be doing — but I don’t think it would be accomplishing as much and helping others as this job does.” You can see the Fox 11 story, and check out more information about the Nov. 15 game, by clicking the links:
