UW-Green Bay Middle School Summer Art Studio Camp registration under way

Enrollment is open now for the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Middle School Summer Art Studio, scheduled for Monday through Thursday, June 30-July 3, on the University campus at 2420 Nicolet Drive. Students eligible to attend are those who will enter grades six through nine in fall 2014.

Students can select from a variety of art media and will choose two sessions as their camp focus. Early enrollment is encouraged to ensure desired course selections. The sessions are as follows:

Ceramics: Introduction to Wheel Throwing for Raku Firing will teach students the basics of hand-building techniques for making functional and sculptural forms. Students will be introduced to throwing pots on a wheel. Professional potter and teacher Dean Hoegger will instruct the class.

Introduction to Fine Art Digital Photography will introduce students to the workings of their own digital camera and Photoshop. Students will work with Lawrence Lazare to take photographs in the environment and in the studio and will discuss images from some of today’s most prominent artists and photographers to learn how and why they make their images.

Wildlife Illustration instructor Judy Sarasin will help students capture creatures of the wild with pencil, pastels and charcoal. Students will develop drawing skills through gesture drawing, shading and the use of grid method.

Cartooning and Comic Book Illustration will feature instructor Tom Wallestad, who has a passion for cartooning. Students will learn basic cartooning drawing skills, the foundation of penciling, inking, coloring and transferring images.

Fashion Design with Ahliah Brazeau and Nina Perkins will explore the fast-paced world of fashion designers, models and stylists. Students will be meeting deadlines, coming up with new fashion ideas and producing outfits that are original.

From Junk to Jewelry will transform cast-off objects into wearable art with jewelry instructor Travis Lewis. Students will be introduced to the basics of jewelry making.

Exploration with Acrylics will offer past and present techniques invoking creativity as campers explore the realms of realism, abstraction and everywhere in between under the guidance of painter and teacher Cristian Andersson.

Beyond the Cover: The Fine Art of Bookmaking: Working with accomplished book artist Kathy Hackbarth, students will create several styles of books ranging from a “Flutter Book” that is put together without any stiches, to a “Japanese Stab Bound Book” that requires the use of drills, sandpaper, waxed linen thread and much more.

Watercolor Painting: In this class, campers will learn brush control and basic wash techniques and gain an expert understanding of color theory with instructor Dawn Flores. By experimenting and working on finished paintings they will learn how to play with watercolor and spontaneously respond to the painting process.

Graphic Design: Bears riding motorcycles, zebras with colored stripes, campers flying in outerspace … Learn how to do extraordinary things using the world’s premier photo editing software, Photoshop. Students will work under the guidance of graphic design professional Addie Sorbo.
