New Music, Hand Drumming concert at UW-Green Bay Friday night
GREEN BAY — The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay presents a New Music and Hand Drumming concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 8, at the University Theatre on campus, 2420 Nicolet Drive.
The concert features student-composed pieces for both ensembles, a song highlighted by a video and old favorites.
For the New Music Ensemble, Tyler Rindo, of Pickett, composed “Red Pill,” and Seth Watson, of Green Bay, composed “Clear Sky Over Black Wave.”
Director Adam Gaines says the ensemble is “doing some wild and out-there kind of stuff.”
Other songs include Steve Reich’s “Pendulum Music,” a piece played in tribute to retiring music Prof. Terence O’Grady; several object pieces played on non-traditional instruments; and “Music in Similar Motion,” a Philip Glass piece with a background video created by UW-Green Bay photography Prof. Sarah Detweiler.
The Hand Drumming Ensemble features only works composed on the UW-Green Bay campus.
UW-Green Bay senior Chris Dinse, of Green Bay, composed the up-tempo song “Groovin’”, which uses traditional hand-drumming instruments, such as conga drums and a güiro.
Director Cheryl Grosso composed the other four pieces in the lineup. She’ll unveil her latest composition, “Rhythm Chant E/C,” which features all three sizes of Ewe drums, and have performers playing some of her earlier works.
Tickets at the door are $7 for adults and $5 for students and seniors.
