UW-Green Bay groups offer evening of jazz May 4
The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Jazz Studies program will let fly with a full, wide-ranging evening of music at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 4, in the University Theatre located in Theatre Hall.
The concert features both instrumental and vocal jazz, student and faculty ensembles, and music ranging from classic 20th century standards to more contemporary selections.
Opening the evening will be the UW-Green Bay Jazz Combo performing “Afro Blueprints” as arranged by student Ben Hogan, pianist. The second tune is “Don’t Need No Doctor,” arranged by student flutist Alton Olson.
Next up is the Vocal Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Christine Salerno. They’ll open their set with “James” by Pat Metheny, followed by the selections “Jeannine,” “I’ll Be Seeing You,” and “Deixa.”
A UW-Green Bay Faculty Jazz Combo takes the stage after intermission. Performing are Adam Gaines, Stefan Hall, Craig Hanke, Christine Salerno and John Salerno, with student Hogan sitting in.
Jazz Ensemble II, under the direction of Assistant Prof. Adam Gaines, will perform the Bart Howard classic “Fly Me to the Moon (In Other Words),” “Caravan” by Duke Ellington, and “Ain’t Misbehavin’” by Thomas (Fats) Waller before closing with the tune “North Shore Morning” by contemporary composer Matt Harris.
Capping the concert will be the veteran student players of Jazz Ensemble I under the direction of Associate Prof. John Salerno, director of Jazz Studies at UW-Green Bay. Noted Wisconsin jazz pianist Greg Pagel will join in as a featured guest artist. Their program includes “All I Do” arranged by John Salerno; the composition “Schooner” by Hogan, who plays drums for the Ensemble; “Ding Dong Ding” by Bob Brookmeyer”; and the Frank Zappa tune “The Little House I Used To Live In.”
