UW-Green Bay to host award-winning documentary, star

The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay will show the nationally acclaimed and award-winning documentary, Waiting for Superman, and host a lecture by one of the film’s stars later this month.

This is the only time the film is being shown in Northeastern Wisconsin. The free public showings will be at 2 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 14; 2 p.m and 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 15; and 2 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 16. All presentations will be held at the Christie Theatre in the University Union on the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay campus. The evening shows will be followed by a facilitated discussion.

A brown bag discussion of the film will be held at noon, Friday, Feb. 18 in Mary Ann Cofrin Hall, Room 204. All events are free and open to the public.

In conjunction with the film, UW-Green Bay will welcome Bill Strickland, one of the stars of the film, to campus at 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 17 in the Phoenix Room in the University Union. Strickland’s lecture, “The Art of Leadership and the Business of Social Change,” relates to the University’s 2010-11 Common Theme, “The Leadership Question.”

Waiting for Superman is a documentary that analyzes the failures of American public education by following several students through the educational system. The film received the Audience Award for best documentary at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival and also received the Best Documentary Feature at the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards.

Strickland, whose work is featured in the film, is nationally recognized as a visionary leader who provides educational and cultural opportunities to students and adults that foster innovation, creativity, responsibility and integrity.
