U. of Washington scholar to share Seattle’s 'green' example

The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay will host a free public lecture by Jeffrey Hou, author of Greening Cities, Growing Communities: Learning from Seattle’s Urban Community Gardens, at 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 14, in the Christie Theatre on the lower level of the University Union.

Hou’s presentation is related to this year’s UW-Green Bay common theme, “The Leadership Question.” He focuses on the importance of engaging marginalized communities and citizens through community design, design activism and cross-cultural learning. His visit was arranged by the UW-Green Bay Center for Food in Community and Culture.

Following Hou’s lecture, a reception will be held in Phoenix Room C of the University Union. The reception will feature people and organizations from Northeast Wisconsin who are involved in community gardens, sustainable agriculture, local food systems and initiatives to improve the community’s quality of life.

Hou is chair of the Landscape Architecture Department at the University of Washington in Seattle. His work ranges from designing urban open space and conserving wildlife habitats to facilitating the rebuilding of indigenous villages. He has worked with inner-city immigrant youths, elders in North American cities, farmers, villagers, indigenous tribes and fishers in Taiwan, China and Japan.
