UW-Green Bay faculty, guest recital to feature miniature masterpieces

UW-Green Bay faculty members and special guests will join forces Friday, Nov. 8 for the third annual concert of “a very small consortium,” a music ensemble dedicated to the performance of miniature masterpieces. The free concert begins at 7:30 p.m. in Fort Howard Hall at the Weidner Center for the Performing Arts.

This innovative ensemble performs “miniature morsels of music” that are either 100 notes or fewer, or one minute or less in duration. UW-Green Bay hosted miniatures concerts in fall 2012 and fall 2011, and “a very small consortium” (lowercase by design) has performed off campus, as well.

For many composers, the idea of writing miniature pieces is appealing, said UW-Green Bay Associate Prof. Michelle McQuade Dewhirst, who both composed and will perform various pieces during the concert. Other UW-Green Bay Music faculty who have either composed, will perform or both include Associate Prof. Eric Hansen, Associate Prof. John Salerno, Prof. Sarah Meredith Livingston, lecturer Abigail Mace, Assistant Prof. Courtney Sherman, Associate Prof. Adam Gaines and Associate Prof. Kevin Collins.

“a very small consortium” will consist of 32 distinct, short pieces for voice, piano, brass, woodwinds and strings. “a very small pause” will serve as intermission, with another brief pause before the ensemble finale.

UW-Green Bay is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music. For more information, visit www.uwgb.edu/music.
