UW-Green Bay theatre presents ‘Blithe Spirit’
GREEN BAY – The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay theatre program will present Noel Coward’s comic play “Blithe Spirit,” later this month in the University Theatre.
Guest Director Gail Childs Daly leads a student cast in this escapist comedy that Coward wrote during the grim days of World War II, when England was under siege from Nazi aircraft. The play borrows its title from “To a Skylark,” a poem by Percy Bysshe Shelley.
It’s a simple plot that leads to farce. Hoping to gather grist for his next book, novelist Charles Condomine invites Madame Arcati, an eccentric medium, to a dinner party in his home.
Humor erupts when a séance conducted by Madame Arcati unleashes the ghost of Elvira, Charles’s temperamental first wife. Elvira is determined to disrupt her husband’s marriage to his priggish new wife, Ruth, who cannot see or hear the mercurial spirit.
“Blithe Spirit” features seven student actors and a crew of UW-Green Bay students and faculty members.
Performances at UW-Green Bay’s University Theatre in the Theatre Hall Building are scheduled for Nov. 13-14 and 19-21. All performances begin at 7:30 p.m.
Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for students and senior citizens. Order online at www.uwgb.edu/tickets or call (920) 465-2217 or (800) 328-8587.
