Institute for Learning Partnership’s Fall Conference upcoming
GREEN BAY — “Closing the Achievement Gap through Culturally Responsive Teaching,” is the topic of discussion at the Institute for Learning Partnership’s 10th annual Fall Conference.
The event includes a keynote address by recognized author and educator, Patricia Bode, and workshops by local experts to help educators and attendees refine their skills through culturally responsive teaching.
The conference is Thursday and Friday, Oct. 9-10, in the University Union on the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay campus, 2420 Nicolet Drive.
Bode, a renowned educator, author and researcher in the area of curriculum reform, multicultural education and culturally responsive teaching, will give the keynote at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9.
Her topic is “Expect Achievement: Culture, Identity and Learning.” She will overview the theories of culturally responsive pedagogy (the strategies, techniques and approaches teachers use to facilitate learning) and showcase several hands-on curriculum examples with case studies and visual examples, including video comments from students.
Some educators will display their classroom research before and after Bode’s presentation on Thursday.
On Friday, Bode will open a workshop for educators and others with a presentation called “Teaching for Achievement: The Role of Culture and Identity.”
Bode’s keynote and Friday workshop will focus on transforming classroom practices, by helping teachers to become more aware of their socio-cultural perspectives and their students’ socio-cultural perspectives (all students of all backgrounds and learning needs). She plans to demonstrate effective classroom practices that engage and include more students and ultimately lead to higher achievement.
The conference is free and will be held in the University Union’s Phoenix Room.
