UW-Green Bay continues as ‘in demand’ institution
GREEN BAY — The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay grew by more than nearly 200 students at the start of the 2008-09 academic year when compared to 2007-08 figures.
Enrollment totals three weeks into the semester show a total student population of 6,263, up from 6,076 a year ago. That total combines 5,478 students taking classes on campus with 785 students enrolled exclusively in Adult Degree and Credit Outreach programs.
UW-Green Bay calculates its fall enrollment numbers on the 10th day of the semester. The figures are a snapshot of the total number of students who earn college credit at UW-Green Bay each year.
Of the student body, 1,011 are freshmen—just 22 off the record-setting freshman class of 2006—and 710 are transfer students, a record number. Last year, there were 672 transfer students enrolled at UW-Green Bay.
With more than 3,600 applications, UW-Green Bay closed its freshman application deadline on April 15, two weeks ahead of last year. The University was one of the first in the UW System to close its application period.
“We have been, are, and will continue to be a University in demand,” said Provost Bill Laatsch. “Our students and our graduates continue to support and improve the region, the state and the nation with the work that they do.”
More in demand than ever was on-campus housing.
More freshmen than ever will call the residence halls and apartments their home-away-from-home this academic year with more than 800 living on campus.
A profile of the freshman class reveals that freshmen come to UW-Green Bay with strong academic performance. They enter college with an average high school grade-point average of 3.28 (on a 4.0 scale).
Twenty-three freshmen had perfect 4.0 grade-point averages, and 27 percent of new freshmen have already completed college credits before starting at UW-Green Bay, including nine who had enough credits to be classified as sophomores.
The total student body represents students from 71 of Wisconsin’s 72 counties, 36 other states and 29 countries.
They graduated from 805 different high schools, including 285 from Green Bay Preble, the most-represented high school at UW-Green Bay.
More than 800 enrolled having already received an associate degree, including 232 from one of the three two-year campuses in the New North region (UW-Manitowoc, UW-Fox Valley and UW-Marinette) and 203 from Northeast Wisconsin Technical College.
The number of military veterans attending UW-Green Bay continues to grow. This year, 227 veterans will attend classes, up 14 percent from last fall’s figure of 192.
