UW-Green Bay brings back Dinner Lecture Series with Basque Region event
The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay is reviving its popular Dinner Lecture Series with a Thursday, Oct. 13 event featuring the Basque Region of Spain.
Associate Prof. Cristina Ortiz, coordinator of UW-Green Bay’s Spanish Program and a native of the Basque Country, will introduce campus and community attendees to this vibrant region through a dinner presentation focusing on Basque language, culture and politics. The meal itself will feature authentic Basque cuisine including salad, pork stew, chicken, potatoes, beverage and dessert.
The dinner lecture likely will introduce many attendees to this distinctive region, which covers parts of Northeastern Spain and Southwestern France, for the first time, Ortiz said.
“The Basque Country features a singularity of culture in terms of language, sports, cultural traditions and culinary sophistication,” she said. “Politically, the region has experienced numerous clashes — some very violent — over attempts to preserve that cultural distinctiveness.”
The UW-Green Bay Dinner Lecture Series was a popular campus and community fixture in the 1980s and 1990s before falling dormant for a number of years. UW-Green Bay’s Division of Outreach and Adult Access is pleased to be reviving the series, which offers an enjoyable, educational chance to broaden cultural horizons, said Mona Christensen, UW-Green Bay director of camps and conferences.
“From authentic cuisine to a lively dinner presentation, this event provides a unique look into the culture of this exciting region,” Christensen said. “I can’t think of a better way to reintroduce Green Bay to the Dinner Lecture Series.”
The Basque dinner lecture event begins at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13 with a pre-dinner gathering in the Phoenix Room of the University Union on campus, 2420 Nicolet Drive. The dinner and presentation will follow, also in the Phoenix Room, from 6-7:30 p.m. Cost is $24 and a cash bar will be available.
