Green Bay Symphony Orchestra moves offices to Weidner Center at UW-Green Bay
The Green Bay Symphony Orchestra has moved its offices to the Weidner Center for the Performing Arts at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, 2420 Nicolet Drive.
Officials with the University and GBSO are lauding the move as a key step in the signature venue’s revitalization plan, one element of which calls for closer collaboration with community and other arts groups. It’s also a logical logistical move, since the bulk of GBSO’s concerts are performed at the Weidner, officials say.
“This move is a continuation of Weidner Center’s Strategic Plan process, which includes increased collaboration with area cultural agencies and arts organizations,” said UW-Green Bay Chancellor Tom Harden. “We are pleased to welcome the GBSO to the Weidner.”
The GBSO has two full-time and seven part-time employees, and until recently occupied office space in downtown Green Bay. The organization began moving into the Weidner Center Thursday, Aug. 2, and is expected to be fully up and running at the venue effective Monday, Aug. 6. Its phone number will remain the same, at (920) 435-3465.
The GBSO has a rich history, and is preparing to inaugurate its 99th season with an Opening Night concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13 at the Weidner Center.
The Symphony Orchestra’s relocation is part of an overall Weidner Center revitalization plan that includes additional opportunities for various community organizations, K-12 educational programming and UW-Green Bay faculty and students. The plan also includes a focus on what traditionally has been termed “mainstage” programming, with the University in May announcing a dynamic and varied 2012-13 Performing Arts Season. The Strategic Plan, which drew on the expertise of an outside consultant, also relied heavily on community and Weidner stakeholder input.
