UW-Green Bay offering new Spanish for Professionals certificate

GREEN BAY — The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay is now offering a Spanish certificate program designed for the working professional.

The Spanish in the Professions (SIP) courses provide learners with a flexible approach to language learning by combining individual, computer-based and multimedia learning with face-to-face language practice during the fall and spring semesters, and with intensive face-to-face classes during the summer.

The program is designed for beginning or intermediate students who want to put Spanish to immediate use in their community or place of work.

With front-line professionals in mind, including customer service representatives, call center employees, hospitality workers, bankers, social workers, teachers and health care workers, students will learn at a comfortable pace, whether they are beginners or intermediate Spanish-speakers.

Students will quickly learn conversational phrases necessary for the workplace and grow to have a deeper understanding of the grammar and written language structure of Spanish.

As communities and workplaces become more diverse, more employers will need professionals with Spanish language skills.

Students will take an online pre-test to determine skill level. The certificate program is not designed for people who are fluent or at advanced levels in Spanish.

The program consists of seven Spanish in the Professions courses. A minimum of four upper-level courses must be completed to earn the certificate. Students can earn undergraduate or graduate credits for courses taken, or they can be taken as non-credit courses.

The fall and spring sessions are web-enhanced with four or more face-time meetings that encourage language practice. The summer session is a week-long, 30 hour, intensive experience that offers a full array of choices for the novice up to an intermediate-level learner.

“With ever-increasing demographic changes in Wisconsin, employers and employees alike are looking for ways to meet the needs of Spanish-speaking customers, students, clients and or patients. The beauty of this program is its flexibility to meet the student wherever he or she is, and provide an enhancement to an existing diploma or degree,” said Mona Christensen, Director of Camps and Conferences at UW-Green Bay. “UW-Green Bay has for years offered Spanish for Professionals courses and programs. The new certificate will be proof positive to employers that students can speak Spanish at an intermediate proficiency level upon completion of the course requirements.”

Students may register for the fall 2009 SIP credit classes in late July. Course fees have not yet been set.
