History is cool: Local teens advance to state competition

National History Day at UW-Green BayCheck out the photos and project titles below, and it’s clear local students are doing heavy-duty work in the field of history — many with the assistance of UW-Green Bay.

It was recently announced, following regional competition, that 47 history projects by 74 Northeastern Wisconsin middle- and high school students have been selected to advance to the state National History Day Contest on May 2 in Madison. In addition, another 29 projects are alternates.

The judging took place April 4 at the regional competition at UW-Green Bay where a record 345 students, representing 23 school districts, took part. Volunteers from the University and community judged the competition. (The University is a strong supporter of the competition. Many of the participating students conducted their research using the collections of UW-Green Bay’s Cofrin Library, with guidance from staff and faculty.) Winners at the state level will go to a national competition in June in the Washington D.C. area.

Throughout the school year, over 1800 students in northeastern Wisconsin researched and created projects to address some aspect of the 2009 national theme, “The Individual in History: Actions and Legacies.”
