UW-Green Bay offers Arts Enrichment for Adults summer program
Arts Enrichment for Adults, a noncredit program offered at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, is designed for adults with interests in learning new genres of art. A wide array of classes will be offered from 6-8:30 p.m. Tuesday evenings, July 15 – Aug. 12, on the UW-Green Bay campus, 2420 Nicolet Drive. Students can choose one class from the following options:
Color Your World: Acrylic Painting — This acrylic painting class is for the beginner, the intermediate and the advanced painter. Attendees will discover the difference between what they think they see and what they really see and achieve the desired results in their work. Students will be underpainting the canvas to achieve value and bring depth to their work, along with learning various techniques by using a variety of tools, acrylic hues and media to make color work for them. Instructor Stephanie Daily has a background in the fine arts, commercial arts and teaching. Currently an art teacher in the Green Bay School District, she previously was a graphic designer and photographer for Fort Wayne, Ind. newspapers. Daily has exhibited work in both oils and photography. This gifted artist/instructor is particularly drawn to architecture as subject matter for her work and often draws inspiration from her photographs.
Landscape Digital Photography — Are you the next Ansel Adams? In this workshop, students will examine photographs of the masters like Adams to discover what makes a good landscape photograph. Instructor and professional photographer Dan Moore will then apply those concepts in the field, using the natural landscape around UW-Green Bay’s Cofrin Arboretum as students’ subject matter. Once participants have taken their photographs, they will move to the computer lab and will learn how to use Photoshop to enhance the images. Please note that this is not a class on digital camera technology. Participants should come to class understanding the basic operation of their digital camera.
Ceramics: Wheel Throwing And Hand-Building For Raku Firing — Some say ceramics is their road to creativity. Others say it is their path to relaxation. Whatever students’ reason for joining Dean Hoegger on this enjoyable and exciting learning adventure, he will guide them on this learning experience. Under the guidance of this professional potter and instructor, participants will learn to touch the clay and shape it in a variety of forms. They will learn and use a variety of techniques in wheel throwing and hand-building to create decorative vessels.
Drawing What You See — In this workshop students will explore the techniques that will make their drawings, whether still-life or portraits, come alive while deepening the understanding of line, tone, shape, volume and texture. Exercises in gesture, contour, proportion, perspective and the use of color media will train students’ hand and build their confidence as they complete realistic drawings while developing a personal style. A variety of media will be used, including graphite, charcoal, colored pencil and oil pastels. Instructor Alice Delzer, in her second year as a drawing instructor in the Art Enrichment for Adults Program, loves drawing and painting from life. She enjoys using a variety of media in her art work and passes on this excitement to her students. Delzer holds an MFA in Painting and Drawing from Northern Illinois University and has an extensive exhibition history.
Book-Making: A One of A Kind Experience! — In this popular workshop, participants will create their own hand-covered book while learning and incorporating techniques used hundreds of years ago. Students will learn about and create four different styles of books, paint their own cover designs, experience the joy of success and carry with them the knowledge and skill that will enable them to make their own books at home. Instructor: Kathy Hackbarth
Watercolor Inspirations — In this workshop students will discover the possibilities of glowing color and misty flowing washes when they allow color to mix on paper. Participants will explore a variety of techniques for creating texture, ways to simplify subject matter into basic shapes that capture its essence, the use of patterns of light and dark to create form, and much more. Students of all levels are welcome. The course instructor, watercolor artist and Presbyterian minister Tricia Matthew, has studied with many watercolor artists and her work has been exhibited throughout Northeastern Wisconsin. She has been teaching watercolor for 11 years and also facilitates workshops in art and spirituality and dream exploration.
Nonfiction Writing: Everyone Has a Story to Tell — The focus of this interactive workshop is memoir narrative nonfiction — “true” stories based on personal experience and writing about the people, events and places that have impacted and shaped participants’ lives. Using writing prompts, students will begin or continue creatively recording their “truth.” They are encouraged to bring pencil, pen and notebook, along with a good sense of humor! Instructor and Arts Enrichment for Adults program director Sandra Shackelford has facilitated Women’s Writing Circles for the past decade. A former journalist, her major work is documenting the decade she spent in Mississippi in the 1950s and 60s working for civil and human rights. Shackelford, who has taught drawing and painting at UW-Green Bay and St. Norbert College, serves as a writing specialist at the College of Menominee Nation’s Green Bay site.
The Arts Enrichment for Adults class fee of $139 covers instruction. Some classes requiring special materials also have a lab fee. Students choose one course that they will focus on during the five-week session. More information and registration is available online at www.uwgb.edu/outreach/artsforadults.
