AseraCare Hospice chooses UW-Green Bay’s Camp Lloyd as grant recipient
GREEN BAY — AseraCare Hospice in Green Bay has chosen the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay’s Camp Lloyd as the recipient of the AseraCare Hospice Community Support Initiative Grant.
The $500 grant will be used to help Camp Lloyd continue its mission of providing a safe environment where children can explore their own experiences of grief, realize their feelings are normal and find support from each other.
“We always try to find something that relates to what we do,” said Mandy Sarazen, bereavement coordinator with AseraCare Hospice. “We do counseling and bereavement programs here so Camp Lloyd is perfectly related to what we do.”Camp Lloyd is a weeklong day camp on the UW-Green Bay campus for children who have lost loved ones in their lives. It’s for children from ages 7 to 14. Through various activities and healing circles that offer group support, the camp’s ultimate goal is for the children to realize they are not alone in experiencing grief and that it is OK to enjoy life even after a loss.
“I think Camp Lloyd is a wonderful endeavor,” Sarazen said. “We don’t have many opportunities like this for kids in our area. There are other camps, but they aren’t located in Green Bay. I think it’s wonderful that we have this opportunity for kids in Northeastern Wisconsin.”
The grant funds can be used for any purpose to maintain the camp.
Camp Lloyd uses UW-Green Bay student volunteers to be “special buddies” for the campers. Over the week, the kids and their mentors form a special bond as together they participate in camp activities, including arts and crafts, music, games, sports, making snacks and more. The UW-Green Bay students can earn internship credit by participating.
“A gift like this helps ensure Camp Lloyd campers will continue to have special and memorable experiences with their camp buddies and friends while coping with their grief,” said Prof. Illene Noppe, creator of Camp Lloyd. “We appreciate the generosity of AseraCare and what their gift will do for the Camp.”
