UW-Green Bay Rock Academy Summer Camp to feature popular, traditional styles

Students entering grades 8 through 12 in fall 2014 will explore musical styles including rock, jazz, blues, singer/songwriter, and classical at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay’s Rock Academy Camp July 27-July 31, on the campus at 2420 Nicolet Drive.

Students of bass, acoustic and electric guitar, drum set and keyboard with at least one year of experience are encouraged to attend. They will study with lead teachers and guest artists who are professional musicians.

The camp director is Michael Tahlier, a Berklee College of Music graduate. Studying under acclaimed musicians Hal Crook, Ed Tomassi and Jon Damian, to name a few, Tahlier has learned a wide range of teaching styles. Aside from teaching, Tahlier is an active performing artist playing lead guitar for the Tim Stopulos Trio, which released its third album in late 2010. The group has traveled throughout the Midwest playing shows off its newest album, “The Long Drive Home.” Currently living in Chicago, Tahlier works for the American Music Institute as the Guitar Studies Program Director and a private studio teacher. He attended UW-Green Bay’s Guitar Camp as a teen.

Guest instructors for this camp include:
• Chris Clemente, bass instructor (Chicago)
• Rich Stitzel, percussion (Chicago)
• Luke Polipnick, guitar instructor (Nebraska)
• Meagan Hickman, songwriter, keyboard, guitar (Chicago)

Rock Academy students can attend the camp as commuters or as residents living in University student housing. Residents will check in on Sunday, July 27, and have dinner and evening activities on campus. The camp gets under way for all campers with auditions and an all-camp meeting Sunday afternoon.

Daily sessions are from 8:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Students will end the camp by performing in a final public concert at 6 p.m. Thursday, July 31, in UW-Green Bay’s University Theatre. A faculty/staff concert is scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 30 in the University Theatre.

The camp fee is $279 for commuters, which includes lunch, and $495 for resident students. The resident fee includes room and board, a t-shirt, counselor supervision and transportation to evening activities.
