UW-Green Bay offering Total Guitarist Camp

GREEN BAY — Students entering grades 8 through 12 will explore styles including rock, jazz, classical and Latin at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay’s Total Guitarist Camp July 26-31, on the campus, 2420 Nicolet Drive.

Students of bass, acoustic and electric guitar with at least one year of experience are encouraged to attend. They will study with lead teachers and guest artists who are professional musicians.

The camp director is Nick Utrie, who has been performing and promoting music in Green Bay since 1993 in mostly jazz and improvised projects. Utrie has a degree in Guitar Performance with an emphasis in Jazz Studies from UW-Stevens Point.

Other featured instructors include Christopher Olson, a faculty member at McNally Smith College of Music in St. Paul, Minn.; Dale Anderson, who has almost 40 years playing blues, rock, folk, and more; Mike Tahlier, who has studied guitar for more than 13 years, playing jazz, funk, rock and blues; Tom Harter, a jack-of-many-guitar-trades who has been playing for more than 30 years; and Victoria Vox, a songwriter who has six self-released albums that incorporate her songs on guitar and ukulele.

New this year is the opportunity to expand the musical experience by mixing with the Jazz on the Bay campers for the last hour of each day. The class will combine the talents from both camps to create combos with rhythm sections, themed combos including rock, jazz, blues, folk and songwriting for instrumentalists and singers.

Students can attend the camp as commuters or as residents living in University student housing.

Residents will check in on Sunday, July 26, and have dinner and evening activities on campus. The camp gets underway for all campers with auditions and an all-camp meeting Sunday afternoon following auditions.

Daily sessions are from 8:30 a.m. to 3:20 p.m. Monday through Friday. Students will end the camp by performing in a final public concert at 6 p.m. Friday, July 31, in UW-Green Bay’s University Theatre.

The camp fee is $259 for commuters and $559 for residents. In addition to instruction, the resident fee includes room and board, a T-shirt, counselor supervision and transportation to evening activities.
