UW-Green Bay offers High School Summer Art Studio

GREEN BAY — The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay is once again offering the Summer Art Studio camp for high school students.

Students entering grades 8 through 12 can sign up online for the summer art camp, held June 21-26 at UW-Green Bay, 2420 Nicolet Drive. Students can do so by going online to www.uwgbsummercamps.com and clicking on the “High School Summer Art Studio” link on the left under the Art Camps heading.

Attendees will be taught by some of the best teachers and professional artists from across the state and will learn black and white photography, multimedia figure drawing, fashion design, metals and jewelry making, computer animation, acrylic painting and ceramics.

Co-directors for the camp are Carrie Fonder and Sandra Shackelford.

Fonder, a sculptor, has had her work exhibited nationwide, including the New York Studio Program and at the Milwaukee Art Museum. She has taught elementary art for the Green Bay Area Public Schools and is the owner of Raw Materials, a sculpture and design studio.

Shackelford is an artist and instructor whose work combines heroic scale drawings, black and white photography and excerpts from the (un)common heroes who make up her historical work titled, “Portrait of a Compassionate Humanity.” Shackelford graduated from UW-Green Bay and did graduate work in fine arts at UW-Milwaukee. She has served on the art faculties at UW-Green Bay and St. Norbert College, and she uses photography and creative writing in her work with K-12 students at Aldo Leopold Community School in Green Bay.

Daily classes are 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday to prepare for the final exhibition.

Students may attend the camp as commuters or they may live in student housing on the UW-Green Bay campus. Camp fees are $249 for commuters and $549 for residents. In addition to instruction, the residential fee includes room and board, counselor supervision, and transportation to evening activities.
