UW-Green Bay jazz ensembles featured in March 11 concert
GREEN BAY — The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay will feature both its instrumental and vocal jazz ensembles in a concert at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 11, in the University Theatre, 2420 Nicolet Drive.
Some selections for the vocal portion of the concert are “If I Should Lose You,” arranged by Kirk Marcy, which is a swing tune that has a section for scat solos and a fun vocal soli section; and “Confide In Me,” arranged by Jennifer Barnes, which is a bluesy shuffle written by Donald Fagen of the band Steely Dan.
“It’s a down and dirty feel with a rocking guitar solo,” said Prof. Christine Salerno, director of vocal jazz.
Another selection includes “Black Orpheus,” arranged by Aubrey Johnson.
“The selection is a beautiful a cappella, Latin ballad,” Salerno said.
Johnson is a former student of Salerno’s and went to Bay Port High School in Suamico. She graduated from Western Michigan University and is now attending graduate school at the New England Conservatory of Music. She was a recent recipient of Downbeat Magazine’s Best College Jazz Vocalist Award.
The instrumental jazz ensemble and jazz combo will play “Heart of the Matter,” by Bob Mintzer; “Somewhere,” by Leonard Bernstein, featuring UW-Green Bay Prof. Eric Hansen on clarinet; “Nica’s Dream,” which features student saxophonists Nick Boreen and Chad Ebert; and “The Lap IS Low,” an arrangement by UW-Green Bay Director of Jazz Studies Prof. John Salerno.
Advance tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for students and seniors. Tickets are available through UW-Green Bay Ticketing Services, (800) 328-8587, (920) 465-2217, www.uwgb.edu/tickets or via e-mail at tickets@uwgb.edu.
