Lawton Gallery features artist Apo Torosyan
GREEN BAY — The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay’s Lawton Gallery will host “Immigration Stories and the Staff of Life,” an installation by Apo Torosyan.
An opening reception will take place from 4:30-6:30 p.m., March 5, with a gallery talk by Torosyan at 5 p.m. The exhibition runs through April 2.
The Lawton Gallery is located in Theatre Hall on the UW-Green Bay campus, 2420 Nicolet Drive.
The exhibit is connected to the artist’s Armenian heritage and the genocide of his ancestors at the beginning of the 20th century in Turkey. In conjunction with UW-Green Bay’s 2008-09 campuswide Common Theme, “Waging War, Waging Peace,” the exhibit also addresses issues fundamental to how we live our lives within the global community, as well as encouraging viewers to reflect upon their own stories and experiences of movement and resettlement.
Apo Torosyan was born and raised in Istanbul, Turkey, and after receiving a master of fine arts degree in 1968, he immigrated to the U.S.
The exhibition also features three related film screenings throughout the greater Green Bay area.
Of particular interest is Torosyan’s recent documentary, “The Morgenthau Story,” in which he interviews three grandchildren of Henry Morgenthau Sr. Morgenthau served as the U.S. Ambassador in Constantinople (Istanbul) from 1913-16, and attempted to alert the world to the massacres of the Armenian population.
Other films include “The Armenian Genocide” and “The Genocide in Me.” See details of the films at: http://www.uwgb.edu/lawton/calendar.html.
The UW-Green Bay campuswide Common Theme, “Waging War, Waging Peace,” is designed to encourage students, faculty, staff and community members to focus on a general theme from multiple perspectives and have a shared experience with open discussion and critical thinking.
The Lawton Gallery will be closed March 16-23 for spring break.
