UW-Green Bay to screen ‘sci-fi’ Metropolis with world premiere film score
One-Night performance is scheduled for Friday, Apr. 28, Weidner Center
Green Bay, Wis. — University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Music will present a screening of the 1927 “sci-fi” film Metropolis along with a live performance of a world premiere film score by the UW-Green Bay Chorale, Wind Ensemble and Studio Orchestra. The one-night performance is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Friday, Apr. 28 in the Weidner Center.
Called “the mother of all sci-fi films,” Fritz Lang’s film has been referenced in film and pop culture ever since its release. The new film score written by UW-Green Bay Associate Professor of Music Michelle McQuade Dewhirst will be performed during a screening of the complete 2010 restoration of the film.
Prof. McQuade Dewhirst says she is thrilled to collaborate with her music faculty colleagues and students to bring this project to life.
“I’ve been fascinated by the variety of approaches various musicians have taken to interpreting this material for a long time,” said Prof. McQuade Dewhirst. “The combination of the film with live music is a special thing. Live music contributes a palpable energy and, I believe the audience will enjoy a truly immersive experience.”
The dystopian film introduces Metropolis, a futuristic city divided between the working class and the city planners. The son of the city’s mastermind falls in love with a working class prophet who predicts the coming of a savior to resolve their differences.
“Fritz Lang was a visionary filmmaker, and Metropolis is his crowning achievement. It’s simply stunning visually and was deeply influential to subsequent filmmakers,” said McQuade Dewhirst. “Iconic scenes from the film have been echoed throughout popular culture.”
UW-Green Bay prof. Kevin Collins will lead the UWGB Wind Ensemble and Studio Orchestra, and prof. Randall Meder will lead the UWGB Chorale for this epic multimedia presentation.
