The passing of Prof. Emeritus Frederick I. Kersten

Frederick I. Kersten, an award-winning faculty member who championed interdisciplinarity and helped found UW-Green Bay’s philosophy program, died Sunday (Dec. 16) at age 81. Kersten retired from the University in 1995. He was a philosophy and humanities scholar who was an early recipient of the Frankenthal Professorship and the Founders Award for Excellence in Scholarship. He was a prolific author and frequent presenter at scholarly conferences, seminars and visiting lecture series across North America. Kersten’s late wife, Raquel, was also an award-winning UW-Green Bay professor, in Spanish and Latin American literature. Their son Andrew would also join the faculty and become the only four-time recipient of the Founders Association Award for Excellence. Arrangements for a possible memorial service for Fred Kersten are pending, and will be announced at a future date in the Green Bay Press-Gazette.
