Phoenix women go toe-to-toe with No. 3 UConn… for a half
The UW-Green Bay women’s basketball team played dead even with defending national champion Connecticut in the finals of the Gulf Coast Showcase in Estero, Fla., Sunday night. Until the 4-minute mark of the first half. Tied at 26, the fast-breaking Huskies ripped off a 13-2 run before halftime and a 20-4 stretch after intermission to claim an 89-53 victory. Mehryn Kraker scored 12 and Tesha Buck had 10 points for UW-Green Bay (5-2). For UConn (5-1), the win was their 56th straight when playing in a regular-season tournament. “You can’t make mistakes against them,” UW-Green Bay coach Kevin Borseth said. “You have no margin for error. None.” Despite the loss, the Phoenix moved up to an unofficial No. 27 in the nation in the “others receiving votes” category of today’s AP Top 25. The team registered victories over ACC-foe Georgia Tech and Pac-12 member Arizona State en route to the finals, and the 36-point loss was, in fact, UConn’s closest game of the tournament. (Maybe we’ll see them in the NCAA finals!) Read more.
