EPA interest in strontium level draws interest in Door County

Earlier this year, we told you about a UW-Green Bay study that documented significant levels of strontium in well water samples collected in certain areas of Northeast Wisconsin. Spearheaded by NAS Associate Prof. John Luczaj, working in conjunction with Associate Prof. Michael Zorn and grad student Joseph Baeten, the research found the naturally occurring and common element present in high enough concentrations to warrant closer attention. (At elevated levels, strontium can impact bone strength and dental health in some individuals. In most cases, water-treatment systems can be effective remedies.) The Door County news site The Pulse revisits that study with news that the EPA “has made a preliminary determination to regulate strontium in the nation’s drinking water.” Read more.
