Students behind campus garden

UW-Green Bay has growing on campus juicy tomatoes, potatoes, lettuce, peppers, green beans and edible flowers in a garden outside the University Union. Fitting, as UW-Green Bay looks to add to its ‘Eco-U’ reputation. Fitting, because a student garden was a popular campus feature for a few years in the 1970s. Perhaps fitting, also, because as legend has it, “Fighting Tomatoes” was a close second to “Phoenix” when students voted to choose the University’s mascot in 1970. The additional greenery is a student-driven project started by graduate student Molly Collard, said Mike Stearney, assistant dean for enrollment and academic services. Collard, seeking her master’s in Environmental Science and Policy, used student funding as seed money to start the garden. Some of the plants are leftovers from the University’s annual heirloom vegetable sale.
