Diamond gem: Fans savor Phoenix softball upset at Notre Dame

To honor baseball’s opening day, we open today’s newsletter with a shout out to last week’s memorable win by the UW-Green Bay women’s softball team. On Thursday night in South Bend, Ind., the Phoenix (6-12) entered the last inning staring down the barrel of a 4-1 deficit to perennial power Notre Dame (22-8). With a two-run, game-winning single from junior Stacey Butts and clutch pitching from freshman Briana Cavin, however, Green Bay rallied for a 5-4 win. “I am just so proud of our ladies and how they battled back tonight,” head coach Jean Rivett said. “We’ve lost some close games so far this year so it was really nice to pull this one out, and a win like this over a really good Notre Dame team is great for the program.” Read more.
