Curling Club in the ‘Times,’ in the title chase
The student curling club is on the ice in Rochester, N.Y., this weekend, taking part in the second annual USA Curling College Championship. They’re getting some publicity, too. A New York Times note on the tournament focuses on the fact curling is self-supporting and camaraderie-driven, and not an NCAA-sanctioned sport: “The defending champion, Wisconsin-Green Bay, is paying its own way to get there.” See the NYT blurb. Locally, TV-26 ran a short story on the club’s fundraising effort to defend its 2014 national title.
As of mid-afternoon, Saturday, the UW-Green Bay students were 2-0, with wins over the home team, the Rochester Institute of Technology, and Hamilton (N.Y.) College. For the latest scores and reports from the tourney (“bonspiel,” technically), the club posts regular updates at its Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/curlingclubofUWGB.
