Chancellor announces immediate cost-containment measures
With the likelihood of UW System funding reductions in the 2015-17 state budget beginning July 1, UW-Green Bay Chancellor Gary Miller has announced cost-containment measures that anticipate a decline in available revenue. Miller distributed an email Wednesday morning (Feb. 4) to all employees. He said the University would begin immediately a moratorium on filling vacant positions as well as a moratorium on out-of-state travel (excluding Minneapolis and Chicago.) Requests for exceptions will be reviewed by the Provost. Miller also indicated that any expenditure authority previously delegated to units and offices across campus would now be centralized and require advance approval at the dean or area-leader level. The measures announced Wednesday at UW-Green Bay come as UW System Administration and other campuses are taking similar steps in the short run in anticipation of a potential double-digit funding cut in the next state budget. Regents and University officials are expected to discuss the magnitude of the overall reduction at this week’s Regents meeting in Madison, and consider more specific campus-by-campus planning in March.
