Green Bay alumni win, in a shootout

UW-Green Bay alumni James Sarow '99, Marquis Hines '90 and Brian Gold '99

These UW-Green Bay alumni are smiling because their basketball shooting skills brought home the traveling trophy for their alma mater at the Jan. 9 Phoenix-Panthers men’s basketball game in Milwaukee. Although UWM prevailed in the Horizon League showdown, 71-51, UWGB was the winner in this year’s version of the annual “Alumni Shootout.”

The winning team, from left, consisted of James Sarow, Class of 1999, Marquis Hines ’90 and Brian Gold ‘99. (Hines, a Milwaukee native who coaches the WIAA state champion girls team at Vincent High School, was a backup point guard for the Phoenix men in the late 1980s.)

During a second-half timeout, the Green Bay alumni lined up at one basket and the UWM alumni at the other, with the first shooter responsible for scoring a layup, the second for sinking a free throw, and the third for hitting a three-pointer. The UW-Green Bay team made their three shots in about 20 seconds, with Hines applying the dagger from long range for the easy win.
