Another Phoenix rises
For many years, UW-Green Bay was the sole NCAA Division I institution with a “Phoenix” mascot. A few years back, another D-1 school, Elon University in North Carolina, dumped “Fighting Christians” and opted for Phoenix. The latest to join the flock is NAIA program Cumberland University, which dumped Bulldogs for the fiery and fierce Phoenix on Jan. 4. Actually, Cumberland has a decent rationale for the Phoenix and the attendant rising-from-the-ashes mythology: their campus in Lebanon, Tenn., was burned to the ground by invading Union forces during the Civil War.
