Restoring islands near UW-Green Bay
It was announced earlier this week that $3.5 million in grants, the first to be awarded from the $475 million Great Lakes Restoration fund, will go to projects within sight of the UW-Green Bay shoreline. Some will go to cap Renard Island, constructed from sediment dredged from the Green Bay shipping canal. Some will be applied to restore the badly eroded Cat Islands near the mouth of the Fox River. Note: The J-S article includes a clickable link to download a report on the Cat Island project. The document includes vintage photos of the “old” lower Green Bay island layout (including a 1960’s image or two courtesy of UW-Green Bay’s own Tom Erdman of the Richter Museum) and numerous references to UW Sea Grant research on the habitat benefits of restoration.
