Champs! Media roundup showcases Horizon title

The excitement continues after the UW-Green Bay Phoenix men’s basketball team on Thursday (Feb. 20) clinched its first Horizon League title since 1996. News coverage on the team’s big win over Valpo included features on growth in attendance, reflections on what’s next and of course plenty of great net-cutting, championship-gear wearing celebration pics.

In his Friday (Feb. 21) column, the Green Bay Press-Gazette’s Mike Vandermause called the win “a steppingstone to the main event, which is an NCAA tournament berth.” WLUK, Fox 11 reports more and more fans are showing up to the Resch Center to watch the men play — an average crowd of more than 4,000, up nearly 1,000 from last year. The Press-Gazette posted a great game-day photo gallery online, and other local news outlets covered the big game and subsequent celebration. Larry McCarren of NBC 26 Sports offered some telling context, noting that the last time the Phoenix clinched, “gas was a buck twenty-two a gallon, and Keifer Sykes was 2 years old. The wait is over.” The wait is over, indeed. A sampling of coverage is as follows:
