'Chronicle of Higher Education' uses Wisconsin example
The Feb. 10 issue of the Chronicle of Higher Education carries a story about “flagship” universities facing choppy waters, with Wisconsin as Exhibit A. The story notes the $5 billion budget deficit, the fact that the cost of tuition at Wisconsin’s public four-year colleges was 24 percent of household income for families in the middle economic quintile and 44 percent for the lowest two quintiles combined, and that the average debt of a graduating college senior in the state in 2007 was more than $20,000.
