What are your predictions for the job market in 2025?
My prediction throughout 2025 is that the job market will continue to provide lower-than-normal hiring rates. With the steadiness of positions and retention of individuals in their current roles, the drop in unemployment rates will remain low. Throughout 2025, the rate of layoffs will continue to stay low and see a continuing decrease. With this prediction, with the uncertainty that came with the positions post-pandemic and understanding life in a remote work environment, individuals have found positions in which they are satisfied. The job-hopping phenomenon has stopped, allowing for a longer tenure of these positions. They provide confidence that individuals feel in their organization, and the trust that has increased from the stability and sustainability of these organizations also allows for lower turnover rates.
The job market will continue to increase due to different factors as well. With the increase in technological advancements and evolving work trends, organizations will continue to see a decrease in turnover rates. Evolving work trends can be described through remote and hybrid work models, pressure for continuing tech and digital skills, growth in the gig economy, reskilling and upskilling, emphasis on soft skills, the rise of sustainable jobs, and health and wellness initiatives.
What fields are expected to grow the most in the coming years?
As expected, with the increase of Artificial Intelligence, the increase of positions within the digital field will see the largest uprise. Positions include informational security positions, data scientists, software development, and cybersecurity. Positions will continue to evolve within the field, but the area of expertise will be required to understand the evolution of technology and the utilization of the resources.
Recent evidence suggests fewer people are moving across state lines in search of work – why do you think this is, and what can be done to increase geographic mobility?
With the increase in different work trends, such as providing remote work, individuals are less inclined to leave their current state for a position. Individuals can negotiate or opt out of relocation when it comes to accepting a position. When selecting the right candidate for a position, it is no longer a consideration based on the candidate’s home location. Which, in turn, has impacted the geographical mobility of stateliness. Most movement across state lines was from employment changes or enhancement to one career in another state. The increase in technology has eliminated the need for these moves and allowed for the opportunity to stay in the same state but accept a new position across the country. There can be a natural evolution to bring employees back onsite or require employees to serve a dedicated time on site. In turn, this would push for the movement across stateliness to increase, but it could also see an increase in the job market. This could lead to more open positions, as well. Depending on the position and the industry, employees may need to be onsite, and some positions do not require the face-to-face modality.
What are the most common mistakes job seekers make when seeking employment?
Job seekers may encounter mistakes from the processes they enable when working through the markets. When creating a plan for a position change, the most common mistake is not providing a clear and concise plan. Individuals run into the mistake of applying for positions when they feel upset about their current position and have emotions tied to the reason for leaving. As a result, turns to accepting a position before fully understanding the capacity of the job change. Some key points that individuals can work through when thinking about making a job change can be:
- Clarifying clear goals
- Create an online presence
- Avoid errors in resumes and cover letters
- Create an impactful resume
- Participate in networking
- Proper preparation for interviews
- Providing proper follow-up
- Remembering the importance of soft skills
