LeCalsey calls for investment in higher education
Lou LeCalsey, chair of the UW-Green Bay Chancellor’s Council of Trustees, said in a Green Bay Press-Gazette guest column Sunday that Wisconsin must invest in higher education in order to compete in the 21st century global economy. LeCalsey said the public should be alarmed by a recent Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance study showing that funding of higher education in Wisconsin is not keeping pace with higher education funding in other states. He also cited the high-quality work of UW-Green Bay faculty and staff. LeCalsey’s guest column is available online.
Excerpts from LeCalsey column:
“No matter which portion of this credible report you choose to focus on, the message is clear: Higher education has not been a funding priority for the state of Wisconsin. This must change for Wisconsin to compete in the highly competitive global economy—an economy that is based more and more on knowledge…”
“Residents of Wisconsin have long touted our ‘world-class’ universities as a major state asset, an asset that contributes greatly to our quality of life. Our recent years of chronic underfunding of the UW System have put that asset at risk.”
