Ward shares insight on state budget

Interim Chancellor David Ward issued a letter to faculty and staff members Monday morning detailing more about how Gov. Jim Doyle’s proposed budget will affect UW-Green Bay. The budget calls for a $174 million reduction of state support to the UW System budget over two years, including a 1 percent across-the-board cut for most non-federal funds and additional funding allocations. Taken together, these actions will lead to a lapse, or one-time budget cut of approximately $2.6 million for UW-Green Bay in the 2009-10 fiscal year and $1.2 million in the 2010-11 fiscal year. “I have no intention of trying to sugarcoat these numbers,” Ward wrote. “The cuts are deep, and they will have a significant impact on our enterprise. They exacerbate the cumulative effect of cuts made during the past decade. However, I pledge to you today that we will do everything we can to minimize the impact through prudent fiscal management.” Read letter.
