In HuffPost book review, Kaye mostly agrees ‘American decline’ is myth
UW-Green Bay Prof. Harvey Kaye, Democracy and Justice Studies, is the author of a book review at the Huffington Post website. Kaye analyzes the new Josef Joffe book, The Myth of America’s Decline: Politics, Economics and a Half Century of False Prophecies. Kaye writes that Joffe does an excellent job of explaining why rumors of America’s declining power — military, economic, and political — are largely exaggerated. The nation will ultimately face up to the “three D’s of Deficits, Debt, and Dysfunctionality” and renew itself through education, innovation, and immigration, Joffe’s book asserts. Kaye also agrees with the author that America should be uniquely positioned as a force for good because of its founding on principles of liberty and democracy. Kaye differs with Joffe, however, with regard to optimism for the future: The UW-Green Bay professor says it will take time (and significant change) before citizens disillusioned and battered by recent events will again support the bold exercise of American leadership. Read Kaye’s piece, “Whither America?.”
