Katers, Dolan receive $29,500 grant to study municipal recycling

Prof. John Katers of Natural and Applied Sciences shares word that he and Prof. David Dolan have received a grant of $29,500 from the UW System Solid Waste Research Council. They will evaluate the effectiveness of municipal recycling programs in Wisconsin. Two graduate students in Environmental Science and Policy, Paula Olig and Amanda Tuttle, will also be assisting on the project.

Katers notes the timeliness of the research in that future funding of recycling in Wisconsin was an important issue during the last state budget debate. The UW System’s Solid Waste Research Program, established by the state Legislature in 1990, is an annual program offering a maximum award of $30,000 for applied research into alternative methods of solid waste disposal, including the reduction of the amount of waste generated, the reuse and recycling of materials, composting, source separation and the disposal of household hazardous waste.
